Over a century after they were first published, the ghost stories of M R James retain their power to terrify and amuse. Following his critically acclaimed 2006 one-man show A Pleasing Terror… Robert Lloyd Parry brings two more of the author’s classic spine-chillers back to life. Oh, Whistle, and I’ll Come to You, My Lad – a tale of nocturnal horror on the Suffolk coast – is considered by many to be James’ masterpiece. It is beautifully complemented here by The Ash Tree, a story of witchcraft and vengeance down the generations. Every Christmas M R James would write and perform new tales, by candlelight, to friends in his rooms in King’s College, Cambridge. Robert Lloyd Parry used to work, like James, at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. He first performed A Pleasing Terror in the Founder’s Library in the museum – James’ old office. Since then he has toured the country performing in various venues closely associated with the author as well as churches, country houses and on a punt on the River Cam by moonlight. His uncanny resemblance to the young James has been noted with a shudder by more than one enthusiastic audience member. The press on A Pleasing Terror ***** Wonderful, magical storytelling The Daily Mail **** Lloyd Parry is always absorbing, and catches the sense of dread that gives James his originality The Times Robert Lloyd Parry restores the charm and pleasure of the original tales with his excellent and convincing storytelling.
